On the Booktube-a-thon channel Ariel made a bunch of
video challenges, but since I don’t make videos I thought I’d try to do the
ones that can work as blog challenges, because I’m a maverick. So here we go.
The first challenge is to show your top 3 book you read because of Booktube.
The first one is Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I feel
like I’ve seen a lot of people talk about this, but the people who made me want
to read it was Sanne of Booksandquills and Pricilla from the Readables. They
both raved about it and they made it sound so exciting and interesting and I
got very excited. I wrote a review, it was gushing and delighted. It’s really
good. It’s about a girl named Cath, who is a massive fangirl and fanfiction
writer, and for the first time in her life she’s not sharing a room with her
twin sister Wren, because they’re going to college. And it’s a great coming of
age novel, and it’s a great exploration of writing and fanfiction and fan culture.
I haven’t read a lot of books on fan culture actually, so that’d be really
interesting.
Misty from the Bookrat pointed me towards this one,
and the other two. She’s the first booktuber I started watching. I think. I am
not good at keeping track of these things, but I think she was the first one.
She always makes interesting videos. I think I found this one because she
mentioned the second book in the trilogy and it sounded really amazing, so I
had to read the first one. It’s about a girl named Karou who lives in Prague
and studies art, but also spends her days delivering teeth to a “monster” named
Brimstone, who lives behind a secret door. Then one day she can’t get through
the secret door and she is confronted by an honest-to-god angel named Akiva and
she figures out her whole life people have been keeping some very serious
secrets from her. It’s written in such a poetic style and the story and
characters are amazing and beautiful and wow. Just read the last one and it’s so
gorgeous.
Again Misty of the aforementioned Bookrat turned me
onto these books by Marissa Meyer. They are retellings of fairytales set in the
future. The first one is Cinder and is based, not surprisingly, on Cinderella.
Cinder is a cyborg and mechanic living in New Beijing and she meets the
soon-to-be emperor Kai and they have an instant connection. Cyborgs are seen as
less so obviously it can’t be, also there are people from Luna (the moon) sort
of invading the earth. The second book is based on Little Red Riding Hood and
called Scarlet. And the third is about Cress, based on Rapunzel. Cinder is a
bit part of both the other books. I think Cress is my favorite so far. Cress
has been kept on a space station for most of her life and is a bit bonkers from
the isolation, and I love her. I am really excited about the last book Winter,
because Winter (Snow White) was introduced at the end of Cress and she seems
even more delightfully insane.
So these are my favorite books (cheating slightly)
I’ve read because of Booktube, there are many more and Booktube always leads me
to amazing books so I’m really happy I found Booktube.
